MONOLITHIC ARCHITECTURE ~ Our World Grows Worse (2024)

Monolithic Architecture is a U.S band with the DNA of grindsters Hobostew and Reptilian Brain among others skulking in a completely opposite sphere of extreme metal. In Monolithic Architecture's realm, time has slowed to a standstill and with a riff pressure that will crush out of existence anyone willing to don earphones and listen for any length of time.

The album 'Our World Grows Worse' is a raw and devastating bombardment of drone infused doom. Starting and ending with blasts of flesh stripping feedback which also permeates throughout the album like razor wire in no man's land, 'Our World Grows Worse' is a Stone Golemesque trudge into negativity. Some chords  wander into a hateful void while others slam into immobile granite walls. 

I've often wondered how 2-piece bands manage to create such cacophonies of sound and Monolithic Architecture treads the same turbulent path.

SEA OF SNAKES ~ Bow To No One (2024)

 

After their previous full length, the excellent 'The Serpent And The Lamb' blew my mind as well as my speakers, now lumbers forth the latest album from Los Angeles Sea Of Snakes called 'Bow To No One' and as with 'The Serpent And The Lamb' this is right on point. 

'Bow To No One' sees the band fully embracing a doomier direction that was hinted at with previous songs such as End Of The Sun. There is an abundance of riffs, huge and full of depth for the listener to revel in. I was particularly struck by the grandeur and clarity of the excellent mix creating a more satisfying crystalline crunch to the tracks rather than a dreary thud. Despite the lucidity of the production, 'Bow To No One' isn't overly polished, the undercurrent of stoner sees to that but neither is it choked in fuzz allowing the dynamism of the songs to shine through, songs that aren't shackled by rigidity that this genre often harbours. enhancing the heaviness of the album and allowing the tracks to ebb and flow like magma.

Tickle your tinnitus with the latest offering from Anointing The Sick. Starting with a dose of Death metal with Saevus Finis and ending with some U.S  grindcore in the form of Phobia. Inbetween there is a big stoner /doom section, some doom chart entries and  name your price albums. PYROGARIC ~ The Serpent (2024)

 

Following the raw offerings of  earlier releases 'Home' and 'Far Away' Pyrogaric is back with more Welsh stoner doom Druidry in the form of the album 'The Serpent'. This album is a more polished affair, with simple song structures embellished with the vocals of Jamey-Leigh Butcher who also sits behind the drum kit. Squeeze the deep, moistened, humid riffs and they'll drip Sabbath, Saint Vitus and Pentagram fleshed out with an earthy swagger.

Pyrogaric has just finished a tour to promote 'The Serpent' and their live performances have been described as 'powerhouse' After listening to 'The Serpent' who am I to doubt it?

VULGARIAN ~ Eye for an Eye for an Eye (2024)

Hateful sludge bloated with the DNA of slow, stagnant doom which takes you right back to the glory days of the 90's. The atmosphere of this release is loathsome. Spiteful and repellant riffs are disfigured by serrated feedback which feels like an icepick being driven into your brain and the barking vocals are gleefully malicious, revelling at the thought of the audience being dispatched by the ensuing onslaught of heaviness. 'Eye For An Eye' isn't all low and slow however, it does occasionally combust and suppurate a noxious concoction of crust laced punk.

HARSH REALM ~ Death Carries On (2024)

Press play and feel your very essence devoured into the maw of The Great Beast. A coagulate of unemotional death doom encapsulated in a bloody crust. 

'Death Carries On' by North Carolina's Harsh Realm is as rancid as death metal gets, slow chugging riffs contorted into even slower, flyblown breakdowns repeatedly abused by a frenzy of hostile violence.

The only boundaries Harsh Realm has stretched is how much pain you can suffer and still enjoy your punishment!

VOLUME ~ Joy Of Navigation (a trip through the eternal unknown) 2024

Originally formed in 1993 by ex-Fu Manchu singer Patrick Brink, the band on this recording features Monster Magnet guitarist Ed Mundell, drummer Mike Amster (Nebula) and production/keyboards by Dave Catching, so you could say that VOLUME is something of a Stoner Rock supergroup

'Joy of Navigation' is the band's latest album and contains five songs of immersive psychedelic stoner. The opening track 'Mercury Pull' is a real slow burner. When it first started I thought I was listening to something by Hawkwind but the celestial petals soon unfold into a Samsara Blues Experiment like stimulant, lazily dissolving into the cosmic ether before the emotion of the song dramatically changes into a ripping, heavy rocking roller coaster.

'Mercury Pull' turns out to be the calm before an extremely fierce storm of  strutting, barrel chested riffs with fuzz  more or less stripped away exposing a diamond hard metallic core. This enables the album to breathe and reveals the most interesting aspect of an already thoroughly absorbing record. If you listen closely, the soloing hardly ever stops. It's either in the background like incessant chatter or posturing wildly above the mayhem, often mutated by special effects pedals.

'Joy Of Navigation (a trip through the eternal unknown)' definitely hits the perfect spot, evolving from the album 'Requesting Permission To Land' which was a musical child of its time (also an essential buy) into a modern, dynamic, sonic force.

ATOMICHAND ~ Live At La Parroquia (2024)

For me to get excited about a split record it has to be pretty exceptional. Lo and behold! Here's one genre bending amalgamation of the heavy stoner psych of Iglesia Atomica and deathly, thrashing grindsters Out Of Hand, that fits the bill perfectly. 

Iglesia Atomica opens the album and I've never heard them rock harder than this. A constant chatter of barbed jams squeal and shriek from the speakers, mutated from the incessant use of the wah pedal and groaning under the weight of stoner riffs, the heaviest I've heard from the band yet. 

Out Of Hand surprisingly features two members of Iglesia Atomica but any other similarities stop there. This section of the album spits deathgrind of the most poisonous kind. Angry, spiteful, with a penchant for exploring the HM-2 sound. A rollercoaster deathride, Out Of Hand live is a raging assault one minute before churning out merciless breakdowns the next.

So, a split featuring two completely different styles of music where Iglesia Atomica fries your brain in acid while Out Of Hand tramples all over the smoking remains.

BLEED THIS EARTH ~ The Shapes That Stood in Silence (2024)

Straddling the the various emotions of despair between My Dying Bride and Mournful Congregation, we have a new album by New Zealand's Bleed This Earth called 'The Shapes That Stood in Silence' It's a tragic tale of Parental devotion and ultimate sacrifice that is captured magnificently in four lengthy inconsolably grieving tracks that sweat fear, dismay and a love that has been cruelly snatched away. There is perfect balance between melodic guitar crying out in anguish against an oppressive backdrop of hulking funeralistic doom outraged at the injustice of it all.

I very rarely mention album covers on the Podcast or in reviews but I'm particularly drawn to this one because it cleverly embodies the essence of the album, the spirits of the doting Parents distraught at the realisation that they must forsake their daughter in order to cure the child of the night terrors brought about by their ghastly silhouettes.

SANGRIA (Chile) ~ Esclavo de la Ira (2024)

 I have a long standing affinity with the Chilean sludge/doom band Sangria ever since I contacted them many years ago when trying to find a copy of their first album 'Renaces de la miseria' The band was kind enough to reply with a CD of the album and also some earlier demo's and the track 'El Esbirro' became a regular feature on the various radio stations I was involved with. And so, after the release of  the excellent 'Agnosis' I was keen to try out the destructive force of Sangria's latest album 'Esclavo de la Ira' (Slave Of Wrath). 

The album is still heavy enough to crush the marrow from your bones but there is a slight difference between this and the others. As usual with Sangria, each song structure is fairly straightforward and won't distract you from your punishment, but rather than suffocating you in doomy sludge, 'Esclavo de la Ira' has a darker, enraged sound to it, reminding me of Triptykon in parts. The riffs have an edge to them, not blunted by excess sludge, although there is still enough to cause maximum pain, giving an overall crunchier more violent sound not heard on previous albums.

DEMON & ELEVEN CHILDREN ~ Demonic Fascination (2024)

 

Last year's demo ended up in my 2023 'Dirty Dozen' for the Doom Charts. It consists of three heavy psych tracks that crackle and spit out an authentic,70's vibe. 

Now we have Demon & Eleven Children's proper debut full length,'Demonic Fascination' and boy, is it killer. Like a séance, vocalist Akinashi acts as the Medium, allowing the music to communicate through her voice and its trance like quality is in perfect contrast to the caustic, grainy, lo-fi sound carried over from the demo. However, what makes 'Demonic Fascination' stand head and shoulders above last years demo is the enhancement of a much meatier stoner doom tone with reverb and wah heavy enough to warp time. Riffs are mighty, and the multitude of jams have been dipped in the same vat of acid used on the last recording. There is some evidence of herb induced stoner groove beloved of East Asian stoner doom bands but Demon & Eleven Children is firmly rooted in the classic Italian style of occultism.

WORMTHRONE ~ Enlightened Through Darkness (2024)

Featuring members from: ENTHRONED, LUCIFYRE, FLAGELLUM DEI, THY BLACK BLOOD, Wormthrone isn't your normal black metal band with a waspish sound. Here lurks a suffocating, toxic album, spewing forth sulphurous riffs from a fermenting tarpit. 'Enlightened Through Darkness' really is relentless in its hatred and anger, but far from being a wall of impenetrable noise, each track has an identity, shifting tempo from an all out sonic blackened onslaught interspersed with death metal and culminating in the final track, the near 11 minute 'Through Pestilence and Holocaust' which sheds its corrupted skin to reveal an almost post-black metal sound.

EBOLA ~ Infernal Revelation (2007)

Never has a band's name suited their brand of music as much as Poland's Ebola. Highly infectious, blackened death/grind who's ferocity can likely cause  hemorrhaging from the ears. 'Infernal Revelation' is an album packed with blistering barbarity, shortish songs that flay without mercy, with searing solo's that pour salt into the wounds.

OUTBACK ~ Hymn of Jupiter (2023)

 Born from the coastal landscapes of Saxon England lumbers a stoner doom heavyweight burdened with colossal riffs of seismic proportions.

I've only recently discovered this exceptional release called Hymn Of Jupiter by Outback and was literally shocked to see that their Bandcamp Page is virtually devoid of  any presence of the usual suspects of the stoner doom community, how can it be that a titan such as this could pass us all by unnoticed.

The album consists of four lengthy songs with a nod toward their doom majesties Electric Wizard but there is also the weedian groove of the Japanese stoner doom scene particularly with the second track 'The Sorcerer' with it's mesmerising but acid flecked solo and the use of psychedelic guitar interludes that locks the tracks of Hymn Of Jupiter into a seamless, unstoppable, eruption of magmic morass.
